About LR-x

What does LR-x® do?

LR-x® is cloud-based software for situational awareness during chemical spills, CBRN threats, airborne hazard events and wildfires. It runs a 3D wind field model and the ALOHA plume model and shows the results on a map on your phone, tablet or computer. The first model is ready in under 5 minutes, followed by three forecast models based on forecast weather, so you can plan threat assessment, muster points, the incident command location, evacuations and containment.

What makes LR-x® different from ALOHA?

Ease of use. LR-x® takes the many ALOHA input fields and puts them into a streamlined app that automatically archives both live and what-if runs. It also adds 3D wind field modeling over terrain. More on LR-x® and ALOHA.

Do I need to maintain ALOHA if I use LR-x®?

No. ALOHA is fully maintained in the cloud for you.

Do I have to use a desktop computer?

No. LR-x® is fully mobile. Use your phone, tablet or laptop, or your desktop if you prefer. It runs on iOS and Android devices and in a web browser.

Using LR-x

How do I use LR-x®?
  1. Deploy: set the incident location and ALOHA parameters while en route, using drop-down and point-and-click fields.
  2. Assess: review the current-conditions model and the three forecast models.
  3. Communicate: share the analysis with other responders.
How do I set an incident location?

Type the incident address (it autocompletes) or find the spot on the map and drop a pin. One tap.

What is the difference between Model Settings and Advanced Model Settings?

Model Settings are the minimum information required, and the fields auto-populate. Advanced Plume Model Settings are optional and let you add details, if known, about ground roughness, the chemical source and the threat zone.

How long does it take to run a model?

The first (current-conditions) model takes under 5 minutes. The three forecast models then complete one at a time, about every 2 minutes. All models are archived automatically, so you can review them later for incident write-ups, after-action reports or training reviews.

Where does LR-x® get its weather data?

LR-x® geolocates the incident and uses the closest public weather station. In 2019 LR-x® adopted IBM / The Weather Company Enhanced Current Conditions and Enhanced Forecast services as its standard weather service. On scene, it can switch to data from a portable or fixed sensor, such as a Coastal Environmental Systems WEATHERPAK®, for hyper-local readings.

What do the threat zone colors mean?

Tap anywhere in the plume threat zone to see details. Red: health effects that are life-threatening or result in death. Orange: irreversible or long-lasting adverse effects, or impaired ability to escape. Yellow: effects that are not disabling and are reversible when exposure ends. Zones are based on Acute Exposure Guideline Levels (AEGL) in parts per million.

Features

What are the main system features?
  • Mobile and cloud-based (no hardware required)
  • Uses the closest public weather station to the incident
  • ALOHA / CAMEO (EPA/NOAA) dispersion (plume) model
  • Forecast models based on weather forecasts
  • Topographic maps of the entire U.S. and U.S. territories using USGS 1 arc-second Digital Elevation Models (DEMs)
  • About 60,000 Tier II chemical facilities on the map with company contact information
  • Can ingest LIDAR-scanned topography
  • Accepts portable weather sensor data for hyper-local extended response
  • 3D wind flow visualization over complex terrain
  • KML export of the real-time plume, real-time 3D wind field and forecast models for ArcGIS
  • Integration with Coastal Environmental Systems WEATHERPAK® sensors
  • All live and training models stored in Model History for after-action reporting
Can I export LR-x® results to ArcGIS / ESRI?

Yes. LR-x® exports the real-time plume model, the real-time 3D wind field model and the three forecast models as KML files you can use in ArcGIS. Other GIS tools that import KML, such as Google Earth, can open them too.

Which chemicals can LR-x® model?

Any chemical ALOHA can model. ALOHA's chemical library holds over 500 pure chemicals and some common chemical solutions, a subset of NOAA's CAMEO Chemicals database, and ALOHA uses a Gaussian model for neutrally buoyant gases and a Heavy Gas model for dense gases. That includes hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and chlorine. Source: NOAA ALOHA Technical Documentation.

Does LR-x® model hydrogen sulfide and chlorine?

Yes. LR-x® models hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and chlorine releases. It runs the ALOHA plume model and shows color-coded threat zones on the map, with the 3D wind field and three forecast models. See H2S plume modeling and chemical plant release modeling.

How does the 3D wind field handle hills, valleys and buildings?

It is a U.S. Army Research Laboratory diagnostic model that spreads measured or forecast winds across a 3D grid over USGS and NASA elevation data (terrain coverage reaches about 80% of the world, everywhere except the extreme polar regions), adjusting the flow so it goes over ridges, along valleys and around buildings. Read how the 3D wind field model works.

Can people without an LR-x® account see a model?

Yes. You can send police, an Emergency Operations Center or other agencies a link that shows the 3D wind field, the chemical, current conditions and forecasts. No user ID or app is needed to view it.
